Majority of Iraqi Lawmakers Now Reject Occupation

On Tuesday, without note in the U.S. media, more than half of the members of Iraq's parliament rejected the continuing occupation of their country. 144 lawmakers signed onto a legislative petition calling on the United States to set a timetable for withdrawal, according to Nassar Al-Rubaie, a spokesman for the Al Sadr movement, the nationalist Shia group that sponsored the petition.

Al Sadr have been calling for this for ages.

The worry for the US government is a shia alliance - Iran, parts of Iraq, Saudi - a powerful block capable of controlling the M.E. This is not part of the plan for US economic interests. I wouldn't expect a withdrawal this year or next year. I mean, the US have just built the biggest embassy in the world in Iraq - apparently the size of a small village - they're not going anywhere.

Well, it is not a good sign of stability when members of the parliament keep fleeing the country.

The British army has been saying they are making the situation worse with their presence for a good while now too. Only last week one ex-commander who apparently says what the serving command thinks (according to commemntators) said he understands the insurgency and he would fight to his last breath if Britain was occupised.
