Comparison To Clinton Is Dismissed
French Counterpart Lacked Substance, Senator's Camp Says

There was a time when advisers to Sen Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) looked abroad for proof that women can get elected to a top leadership role in the modern world: Margaret Thatcher, the former British prime minister; Angela Merkell, the German chancellor; and Michelle Bachelet, the president of Chile.

But as presidential candidate Ségolène Royal was defeated by a conservative man who had been France's chief law enforcement officer, the Clinton campaign was quick to dismiss comparisons between their candidate and her Socialist counterpart across the Atlantic. "Other than the fact that they are both women, they don't have much in common," said Howard Wolfson, Clinton's communications director.

Royal wasn't so much defeated by Sarkozy as defeated by the chauvanists in her own party who were willing to lose the election rather than have a woman President. Royal's results were very respectable to say she was standing alone and constantly undermined by the jealous males of her party.

So how does that explain how she lost the woman's vote so soundly?

No poll had women voting for Sarkozy anywhere close to the majority he scored among them.

Are French women chauvanists too?

She didn't lose the elections so soundly. Sarkozy's party was already in power so this was the right retaining power, not winning power and in the last Presidential election, Royal's party didn't even have a candidate in the Presidential run off. Much to the chagrin of her colleagues, she did too well for her to be ousted and probably better than any of them could have done. Her results were a big increase in votes for the left.

Funny this should come up.
I'm listening to the Howie Carr Show out of Boston and 10 minutes ago he was talking about how Hillary Clinton took three private jets in one day recently on her campaign.
And he said she rejected a Gulfstream 2 and demanded a Gulfstream 3.
Also she likes to de-plane in the commercial sections of airports "occaisionally" to "let the common folk think she's one of us."
Rich people are different than you and me.

Maybe females vote with the brains, as opposed to some misguided allegiance to their chromosomes?

Which is not to say that I agree with how they all voted, but your logic seems to be employing the
circumstantial fallacy to prove your point.

I don't really see what the relevance of that statement is. Are you suggesting women should vote for women and men should vote for men?

defeated by the chauvanists in her own party

If she had captued the women's vote this would not have mattered.

So in truth chauvanists did not beat her, it was her failure to connect with female voters that lost her the election.
